1866 Chassepot Bayonet

In our travels we came across this French Sword/Bayonet.  We've identified it as an 1866 or later Chassepot.  The  blade rivet is on the third cordon, or ribbon, meaning late 1866 or later.  It is 27" or 69 centimeters long.  It has never been cleaned or polished, as far as we can tell, so we leave it up to its new owner as to whether restoration is desirable or not.  The Chassepot remains famous as the arm of the French forces in the Franco-Prussian War of 1870-1871.

We think this sword would look great over a mantel, or in a man cave, or for the lover of military history.
